“To Ken (42) you might want to consider getting a job. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur, and that doesn’t make anyone bad, wrong, or less than. Just my opinion.
Howard”
Howard, this is very true. I have quite a handful of people around me, caught the make money online fever( a disease documented as MMOF in the medical journal ), end up wasting days and nights and money on something they do not have the aptitude for.
Would be good if they can have a vaccine or something to protect people from MMOF.

Hi Stephen
You made an interesting comment-and have paused me to think-
“Cashflow is not income” -to clarify are you refering to Revenue VS Profit?
This is a critical point of distinction ..Can you please elaborate?
Thanks

I would like to shout out to agree with Phoenix (#48)
I am not sure how many other marketers out there talk about business building
or educate on stategic planning as much as Stephen Pierce.
Don’t get me wrong some of the tools and products they sell are great-and some not so
I have found That Stephen gives thought provoking and real life education
That is far more valuable than any software, ebook, etc.
What i still have ringing in my ears is “in a competetive environment a step by step
approach will leave you for dead-need to be able to adapt to your terrain”-or somthing along those
lines….

Hi Stephen
Your talk was excellent as usual and does make sense.
What you have done is argued for the best approach for building a business with income. That is start with getting the income stream working first and then build the business processes to support the income.
Text books on the other hand re business training, encourage you to plan the WHOLE business process up front.
Mind you, you are supposed to test the market to see if your business idea is going to work and that is where your 3 questions at item 40 comes into play. That is – Will the business idea work before you waste even more time.
Your approach cuts the whole process into 2 parts. In this way, you can quickly determine if there is a business with the income producing idea you have at low cost and with minimal effort.
Many a time, you see people with little business expertise having a great business but unable to take it to the next level because of lack of business disciplines in place. They must have seen the opportunity and ran with it.
The questions at item 40 is a good test of an idea you may have. No doubt behind each question, is a process on how to test the income producing ideas. Would not mind hearing your ideas on each point at a later date.
However, another HOW I feel needs to be added, that is “HOW you will serve?”. Even in building the income part first, a degree of “HOW” that is going to happen needs to be addressed. This also needs to be tested before the full business process is built.
Thanks for another provocative lesson.

Hi Stephen
Once again you are spot on. Thanks for the pearl of wisdom.
For Ken(42)and Howard(45), Howard said “..not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur…” – my take is that no one is cut
out to be an entrepreneur. You cut yourself out to be one. If things are not working out, change the plan but not the goal!
If you keep hitting brick walls, find a way through it or around it instead of abandoning it. I am not suggesting that you
be inflexible. By all means change your goal if you have a strong reason. Otherwise you build a pattern of turning the
other cheek whenever you face a challenge. Ken, I noticed you said you cannot sell. Mentally, you are already defeated. You
definitely can sell. You sold to 3 customers, right? Moving forward, your challenge is to sell to more people. Think about
it. Let’s make 2008 amazing!

Yes, a business that makes no money (or even loses money) can be just as active as one that makes
money. And this reminds me of an episode of a UK TV series titled ‘Yes Minister’ where the government
builds a hospital and staffs it, but doesn’t have enough money to deal with patients. The Union objects to
closing the hospital as people will lose jobs. Focusing on the goal rather than the activities generated is
worth remembering.
[Reply]
Stephen this is deep talk it only make sense to generate income before totally concentrating on building a business I gotta admit that I have been caught in that trap quite a few times and still have not gotten anywhere, so I agree 110% income first business after, or if one is capable of doing both then they should go right a head.

These links give a few interesting perspectives…
Business – http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/business http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/business
Income – http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/income http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/income
I’m fairly sure that when any of us say, “I’m building a business” that we do not mean,”I’m building something that’ll keep me occupied”.
What we’re really saying is, “I’m building a structure that generates money for me to live the way that I want to live my life, (and simultaneously is a medium for my self expression and fulfillment)”.
Therefore if income is our primary and ultimate target, then why not get right down to it and get very honest about that, with ourselves?
“Long ago, a brilliant psychologist proved that if you present a rat with 3 tunnels, only one of which has some cheese in it, the rat would explore all the avenues until he finds the cheese. And, after reinforcement, he will ignore all non-cheese tunnels, and go down only the one with the payoff. Then, if you take away the cheese, he will soon learn that it’s gone, and will begin to explore all tunnels again, looking for the reward.
Human beings, in stark contrast, will go up a tunnel looking for whatever ‘cheese’ the situation is, never get any, but they proceed to go up that same tunnel for a lifetime. And what’s driving them is reasonableness, or rightness. That is, they get to say to themselves, quite logically: ‘I saw cheese go up that tunnel. It’s got to be up there. I’ll find it, goddam it, if it takes me a lifetime.’
So they get to spend a lifetime without cheese, but always being able to explain (to wives, friends, acquaintances—anyone who will listen) that they’re up a very reasonable tunnel. And they find people to agree that the cheese really belongs up that tunnel. (Those people are called really close friends!)
If you’re running your life up a tunnel (or a series of them) with no ‘cheese’ for you; you’re beginning to get what I’m driving at: that running your life being right is pointless and I don’t mean that what you’re doing is wrong; I simply mean it doesn’t work, and that should be the main criterion.” ~From EST: Playing The Game The New Way written by Carl Frederick in 1972~
I love the Website Earning Ability Marketing Audit. Have printed it out for regular reference. Can see quite a few things I’m not doing, yet could add quite a few others that I am. Currently this list is my only way of sharing some of the online “stuff” I do – http://claimid.com/thea and might be of use to someone here.
Personally, I list many of my regular marketing tasks in my Motivation Software. It helps to remind me of the many I want to return to at various times. The software can be downloaded free at http://www.forwardsteps.com.au when you use the Tell-A-Friend button there.
By the way Stephen, if you are not yet listed at Self Growth (http://www.selfgrowth.com/experts/thea_westra.html), you may find it beneficial. A few of the other members are Anthony Robbins, Stephen Covey, Eva Gregory, Susan Jeffers et al.

of reaching the global market place and making money is part of
the overall plan.
I can identify cos I am one of those slower learners where I haven’t
made money online yet and can’t decide on a niche that I can add balue
and totally dedicate myself to and for 2008 I have made it
my resolution to make some income first cos of all the
expenses that had been flowing out
for the last 12 months.
May I know the top of your list for money income methods
that you recommend? I am working on learning up selling

I agree with everything you say. I just wish I could implement it!
I SO need your help! My site, above mentioned, has been up since 1996.
We make the Rolls Royce of therapeutic bracelets. In 32 years, we have never had a single return of one of our bracelets and our customers continue to buy from us. But I can’t get NEW customers. I’ve tried Google, Yahoo.Ask, all the usual suspects. Orders trickle in and capital gushes out.
Please help me.

Stephen,
Great Talkback session. I too have come to the conclusion that working ON the business generates less money than working IN the business. I find that MY reason for NOT generating the income I know I can generate is because I have so many things to do to get the model perfect BEFORE I present it to the world! (ha!) It’s related to corporate conditioned thinking…(I have designed a workshop about this!). Anyway back to my thought…getting the courage to go out in the marketplace with an idea before it’s perfect is big if you’re not a sales personality. But I believe it’s the difference between success and failure and that we can break through that barrier and save ourselves tons of misappropriated funds if we test our concept in the lab (the marketplace) before we declare the perfect business mode. Bottom line. I totally agree with you. keep it comin’

I haven’t read the report yet so I can’t comment on that. But as far as earning income while working at building a business it’s a no brainer.
If there is a guaranteed way for one to earn income while they are working at building their business to me it would be common sense to learn what that was. Even if it had no connection to the business you’re building because you can then use the money in building your business.
Unless this is a trick question the answer to me is obvious. You do what you need to do and earn the bucks. LOL
[Reply]
It’s my view that it depends on your positioning. For example: I started an Internet business in 1996. Within a year I had schematics of dating sites, auction sites and various portals. I did not have the funds to develop these ideas to scale. Match.com did and eBay did and look what happened. I encounter situations all the time where an existing business is evaluating a new product line, a new venture in a new line of business. Capital is allocated to these ventures. Some word and some do not meet projecttions.
Stephen mentioned the dot com failures. A number of these were very valid business models. However, I don’t think venture capital money was spent wisely. There is plenty of evidence the cost strucutures were way too high.
Cash income by definition is required for longevity. I use cash income as a key measurement of business performance success. Very few business successful business models are started with no cash. Even the internet marketer is paying for a connection, computer and some type of marketing to get started. Multi-level people start with some cash, buying products, paying for a web site, phone line, expenses of meetings and more.
I see plenty of evidence of people forgetting the importance of cash profit. They become tied to the business and these are the ones doomed to fail if there is not a quick refocus on income.
Thank you Stephen for planting the seeds for discussion on this topic – very relevant and very important.

Basically, your talking about what most people did with their Hobby. Firstly, their hobby becomes a part-time enterprise by generating occasional income. Secondly, some of these enterprises prove to be promising cash flow generators. Thirdly, these cash-flow generators serve as a foundation for a business. Your analogy regarding stock investments clarifies your theory best.
Income to a business is like water to trees. No water – no leaves, no income – no cheese. Death is assurred. Appreciate your insights interest in collaboration.

It is a great thing when the business you chose is something that you really love to do. I find with the right type of research that a person do befofe venturing into said business of their desire, the likeness of the business that you have chosen have a lot to do with the success of that business, the more you care about what you are doing shows the type of desire that you are trying to acheive. In an active role your positions that are taken in a business show how determine you are at what you are doing. With the understanding that “Fear is the enemy of ‘Faith and that ‘Doubt is his cousin.” Confident is what is needed to believe It Can Be Done, along with Responsibility.

However, when I am generating income, the business owner in me will start thinking on how I can grow it into a business

To further Stephen’s examples, corporate history is littered with highly profitable companies that went belly up because they had no cash flow. Revenue streams are important, but clearly, you do have to spend time building your business too. It’s a bit like asking which is more important, your arms or your legs? Well, they are both important! You don’t want to be without each of them.

Thanks for the PDF, it is a really good tool.
I believe the most important thing in a business is to create wealth or profits; otherwise it will simply not survive and the overall will be a waste of energy.
So I agree with you Stephen, building an income is the most important step, then we can think about building a business to maintain, control and direct the income stream
I reckon, it is really easy to be carried away into the business stuff rather than remain focus onto the income generation
Thanks
JM

pennystocks…
pennystocks information…
Hello,
Lost in the web here. I am having zero success with any of the tools I can find. I am disabled, unemployed, ex-trucking, zero retirement Vet and need what little disablity I have to live on. So all the “free” marketing I find and try is just taking time from me and not returning anything. I have many affiliations I set up – as was adivised by several site owners that said “pay me or no money”. I also set up a site on the microsoft business area for free and added a couple pages. However, my multiple classifieds i have posted every where get zero responses or no click throughs. I even signed up as a “seller” of a hot new product – E-Cigarettes and made a page for it. However i go back to the limited marketing I am able to get. I don’t make videos, I can not do “sales” talk nor am I able to buy in to autoresponders or any of that kind of stuff.
Any ideas of how I can get loads of actually interested traffic? I am to the point that I actually need a “follow the ball” instructioning. As I said, I got no change to put out – ask the multiple bill collectors calling daily. Well if there is any hope for me let me know.
