I love it Stephen. What you described, the soldiers who were able to quickly return to an ‘at ease’ state after the initial shock is a very powerful lesson. The bottom line is that an increase in our emotions decreases our intelligence. In other words,
As Emotion Increases
Intelligence Decreases
Once we manage that emotion, we bring ourselves back to the present so that we can make better choices and ultimately perform at our best.
Thanks for bringing me back,

Hi Stephen
This is a VERY GOOD subject to talk about anytime. Many people don’t like to talk about because it is (personal). Many of us have this problem, I have it my self, you get stuck and can’t get loose. Often you have to shake yourself loose and get moving to get things done. It’s when you stop and get hemmed up that you get into trouble. Most times we are trained from childhood on to put off things. We tend to be late all the time on our jobs, appointment, job interviews or anywhere we suppose to be on time if we are put offer. We put off until tomorrow, because if seemed to be safer than today. When it comes to tomorrow it is usually worse the day before. Fear is there, from what? Just going through the motions of getting it done, that though is in your mind. When you actually go thru it it’s totally different. It is usually quick, fast, and in a hurry. ( Over and done with). The MIND, the mind will play tricks on you every time.
All these problems start in the mind. If we get the brain straight the rest of us will be follow suit.
I will try to work on all the areas that you brought to my attention and ponder over each question. I really want to be a better person and mother.
Thanks You Again

Hi Stephen,
Another powerful message. Asking a lot of questions is the key to powerful thinking.
Have a great weekend and continue with this great work.
Thanks,

My power to change starts with identifying the fear, then forgiving myself for allowing the fear. The urge to change my state then flows out automatically, and I simply do so.
Easy?
Not the first time
Not so hard the second time
Dead easy the third time.

Hi Stephen,
It is kind of funny that this talkback touches on some issues, that I have been thinking about and working with these days. So I can honestly say, that You have given me some major contributions with this one.
In the first part of your talkback I was thinking about a book I read called Psycho Cybernetics and instantly recalled and related a part of this book with the military project.
In the book it is also talking some about that shoot of adrenaline and how it affects different people. Some people persee this adrenaline shot as fear that paralyzes them and others see it as a boost of energy that enables them to perform better than they usually do. It goes on and points out that this shot of adrennaline, allthough percieved and experienced differenty by different individuals, is actually one and the same thing.
It says that when a person experiences a situation that arouses fear, that situation is picked up by the nerveous system that sends a signal to the brain and releases this adrenaline shot. The energy boost a person recieves is then supposively exual to the kind of danger one faces and the system estimates this by the degree of fear that the individual is feeling.
So here is a thought about the possible problem and reason why there can be such a difference (from my point of view of course based on this book). – It seems that A LOT of people are exaggerating the kind of fear that they are facing in their minds, ultimately they recieve too much adrennaline. They recieve the adrennaline boost needed to climb a mountain, even though they are only faced with a molehill. So they get this excess energy that builds up inside of them; this energy is not released and so it turns inwards and paralyses the person.
This is something that really got me thinking when I read it, because I have often felt paralysed with fear and I now recognise that the danger I was facing was not really that dangerous at all. At the time when I was ignorant about this, I would have never thought that it was POWER that was causing me to become paralysed. It really puts a whole other perspective on it, at least for me.
So here is what I love about this talkback.
The main cause of fear is ignorence. We fear the unknown, we fear what is out of our comfort zone, we fear what we are yet to discover. We experience fear when we are moving into an unknown area of life; fear is caused by ignorence.
It is said that the truth would set us free and of course there is only one thing to be set free from and that is ignorence.
So the whole progress that You are discribing has an amazing purpose. I have not gone through the process yet (because You insisted that I reply first), but I absolutely know that it is intended to remove this ignorence and to develope understanding in the areas where one experience fear; that being the areas where a person is somewhat ignorent.
This will remove some of that excess fear, so that when the boost of adrennaline does come, it will be in harmony with the situation; it will cause a person to act along with this power, instead of having that power overwhelm the entire body and cause it to become completely enabled because of the overdosis of adrennaline. – I love it! Absolutely brilliant.
And just to play along with this thought. When the boost of energy fits the kind of danger one is faced with; well is it not that very same boost of energy, that can make an elderly woman remove a car from her grandchild that is trapped underneath? Is it not the same energy that makes a man run into a burning building wearing only a t-shirt and jeans to help the people inside? Is it not the same energy that made You stand up to that bully, ask that girl for a date, make that business and so on? I believe it is.
This boost of energy is a MAJOR benefit to us when used correctly. But a major benefit can also function as a major disadvantage to us; when used incorrectly. The very same can be said about our sense of sight; it gives us the ability to see beauty, but also the ability to see horror. There is no up without a down, no in without an out, no left without a right and no advantage without a disadvantage.
So this would say to a person who often gets paralised with fear; just like I did. I would say; – “YOU ARE BOOSTING WITH ENERGY! Dont fight it, learn how work with it – develope understanding”. At least that is what I am telling myself.
I am currently in the process of developing understanding about my fears. I already have a list of fears and this talkback has really given me a lot more tools to work with in my process to develope this understanding.
However I discovered a funny thing while reviewing my list that I would very much like to share. Behind EVERY fear lies something that You want. – I would advise anyone to examine this statement. Behind everything that You are affraid of lies something that You want – and fear seems to keep it out of your grasp.
I will just name a few examples.
I love my family and a fear of mine is; What if they get hurt and what if they feel unhappy? I am somewhat affraid of that happening. So what do I want? I want them to be safe and happy right?
Well I am also affraid of going broke. So what do I want? I want to have plenty of money, so that I feel more free and able to express myself.
I am sometimes affraid that time is slipping through my fingers, and that I one day wake up realising that I have wasted my life. So what do I want? I want to make something of this life, I want to experience quality time and feel alive.
So “fear” and “want” seems to be connected with eachother and that realisation kind of created a dawn for me.
I am gonna write some more and I will start with a great quote:
“Courage is resistance to fear, the mastery of fear and not the absense of fear”. – Mark Twain
So not only should a person develope understanding, a person should also develope courage.
There is not a single person in the world that was born with courage; why? Because noone was born with fear.
If a person had no fear, that person would have no need for courage. So courage is a quality that must be developed and it is developed by the person who is able to face the fear and challenge it.
Many people would say; I am not courageus and they may be right. However anyone can develope courage if they commit to doing it. You have not been given a cirtain degree of courage that will always stay the same, You have developed the amount of courage that You have at this present time and You are fully capable of growing it.
Something that I find comical is; You can talk to an individual who will claimb that they are very courageous and also claimbs that they fear nothing. What an amazing display of ignorence they advertise when making such a claimb.
If a person is very courageous, then that person has great mastery of fear and how can anyone acchieve this mastery if indeed they feared nothing. I would claimb that these indiviuals are so affraid, that they do not even dare to face the fact that they are indeed affraid of many things.
What I am trying to say is, that I feel that it has been a great benefit for me to start studying this quality – courage.
I for one did not have the right information about what courage even was until recently. I believe that many people think, that a person with great courage is a person who has no fear. I have personally come to realise, that this is absolutely impossible. It is an idea that contradicts itself.
Courage conquers fear! – Great statement that I will use to wrap this one up. Thanks for another great talkback.
Kind Regards
Jimmi

Wow. Stephen it was perfect, providential timing for me to listen to this. Just a few days ago I started taking inventory of where I’d come from, where I am, and where I’m going. Frankly, I got off track and forgot my accomplishments; I didn’t even realize it! I don’t even know how long I’ve been off track; I can’t pinpoint it. My guess is that it’s the cumulative effect of small shifts over time. I can analyze that later. My immediate focus is to accurately recognize where I am now and what I need to do to change direction and thereby change my destiny.
Thank you for the kick in the pants.
Sincerely,
April

Is there any way to put these into some other format, possibly a downloadable MP3?
I have a very slow dial up connection and can never get the whole talkback, only the first 5 minutes, if I’m lucky.

If there was any key to success it would be .. Being able to get back up as quickly as possible when you get knocked down. In fact I think it’s just being able to get back up every time you are knocked down. To keep pressing forward. To always look ahead instead of backwards.
I like what you said about procrastination. I think the easiest way to overcome that is to look at the bigger picture. Also to associate more pain to NOT completing a task than to completing it. So like you said, even though you felt like procrastinating to do this talkback .. You thought about us.. And you knew how much value it would give us by writing a talkback.. And you didn’t want to let us down … that’s what moved you
I think on your way to success it’s a constant battle of choices. Between choices that are going to move you forward and choices that are going to hold you back. Success is about making the right choice, every single time. It’s about having the discipline to do what needs to be done.
It’s about choosing to GROW over choosing to be COMFORTABLE. Success isn’t a specific place in time. It’s a process … It’s about how to choose to live the journey
Thanks Stephen

I have been working on my own growth and my brother as asked for advice for his own. Your talk and questions to ask himself are perfect and I can go over it and help him. Now I don’t have to re-invent the wheel. Thanks!

Jacqueline said you sound too much like Tony Robbins. What a compliment! Today’s talkback on Powerful Questions made me think of something Tony says, “The quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask.”
You have a great unique perspective that helps me look at things differently.
I’ve just written big post its full of questions that are going onto my bathroom mirror for me to ponder each day. I’ll be looking at these tonight to meditate more on these questions.

This is good info. It really helps when you are looking at what is working for you and what isn’t when you can look at your past choices unconditionally. Don’t judge them but accept them as choices that were perfect in the space and time that they were made. When you can look at these choices in an unconditional way, you are more likely to uncover the motivations behind the decisions, and will be able to really make a choice that is based in truth and not based in illusion.
