The Gremlin That Steals Your Success

March
12th

It’s 1:45am in the morning here in Sydney Australia as I post this.

We are here for our UYMG Hands On Workshop that we do for our students.

If you want to see a really cool short video of the opening of this hands-on-training workshop in Malaysia, you can check it out on my MySpace page.

We had over 500 of our students show up with their laptops ready to learn and earn.

In this clip you see the opening of UYMG in Malaysia and I bring up 32 of our amazing students on our Malaysia Alpha Leadership Team.

Enjoy the clip here http://www.myspace.com/optimizationseries

Okay,

Today is Part 2 of your 3 part series on the Power to Act Effectively.

In today’s session we will look at the gremlin that steals your success and robs you of satisfying progress.

Once you conquer this gremlin, you can really become the master of your life and experience all that you desire.

So let’s get started.

  • That’s great Stephen, everything boils down to taking action.

You develop your skills by doing. You can change your life if you are able to see your skills and build your cash machine based on them.

The point is that many people know their skills but don’t want to take a risk. If you want to move forward you have to take some risk and act, the worse thing that can happen is that you achieve nothing, but if you don’t act and you don’t take the risk you never know.

Success is nothing but the fruit of resolution and intellect applied to the affairs of the world. The game requires coolness, right reasoning, promptness, and patience in the players.

    Thanks,

    Thanks Stephen..

It is about recognizing and acknowledging that something isn’t working and then taking the steps and actions necessary to correct it.

I have experienced all three areas, but have been taking the steps and actions necessary, and correcting them one by one.

I like your statement of “you don’t skills by LISTENING”… this is so true…we MUST Take Actions to learn and develop them from your listening.

    Looking forward to Step 3…
    Have a FANTASTIC Day.

  • The gremlin has been stealing your video widget so it doesn’t show up on your email to me. Have others had this problem?

  • Stephen,

Powerful insights. You broke down and articulated the reason people don’t enjoy the success in life
that they could very expertly. It’s all about taking action and avoiding procrastination. Like in
business nothing happens until something is sold…in life nothing happens until some action is taken.
Overcome the “inertia demon” and the world is your oyster.

Looking forward to your next installment.

  • Hi Stephen,

This talkback kind of got me wondering and I am possibly a little confused even.

Well first of all I am aware that something has to change and I am doing something about it. However I find myself at a point where I am not actually able to act on it.

Hmmm… On these talkbacks and on a lot of the material that I additionally study, I often get these “do that, thus and so” in regards to the business that one operates. However I am yet to even operate any kind of business. I am a few steps farther behind, where I am first to engage into a line of business.
So I am not completely sure if the action that I do take is good or bad. There is definately a sort of inertia due to the confusion that I still have and I believe that finding the proper knowledge seems like the way to go for starters.

So here is what I think about that.
First of all I may have some cognitive inertia (not sure if I spelled it right). Meaning that maybe there are some changes I need to make that I am unaware of. – Besides looking for knowledge, I have not really engaged any other type of action like asking for help and advise, and I can only assume, that some of the action that I could take right here and now is simply not taken.
So I am kind of thinking; besides just looking for knowledge, what else could I possibly do that would help me now or later on in the process?

Next I absolutely have action inertia. I am not yet skilled to do the things that I want to do to change my current circumstances. I have this vague idea of how things fit together, but no substancial knowledge in either of those areas.
So I find it all too easy to procrastinate on any kind of real action due to the lack of knowledge and what I learned so far cirtainly has not changed that, so maybe I need a better and more practical source of information.

And finally I worry that maybe I DO have some volentary inertia. Did I ever really check to see if I actually DO know what actionsteps I can take that will get me going in the right direction? If I do know and maybe I actually do, then I must be voluntarily stuck to some degree.

So I do not know how to get this desired business started and really the question is; what DO I need to know and where can I find it? If I have failed in finding any kind of knowledge that I can utilize, then the objective must be to find that AND utilize it. But it would also be a mistake to procrastinate on doing the things I can do right now, so I think it is important to define these areas as well and start doing that.

I absolutely have to admit that it is frustrating that the only kind of action that I feel I can take, is seeking more knowledge and still feel like I am going nowhere. I would love to get to a point where I can actually get started and do something practical. In other words, start developing the actual skills that I want.

But I have somehow been stuck and not knowing if I am going in the right or wrong direction. I think it is actually both.
I am doing some things right and by not doing other things, I have also been doing some things wrong.
So I think it is good that this talkback kind of confuses me. I probably need to be confused in order to reach a new level of clarity in regards to this area where my knowledge and experience is very poor and unfamiliar.
But I do understand that if my only course of action is seeking knowledge, then my action plan needs to be redefined and expanded.

So I guess I have a lot of work to do. Because what I am doing now in regards to starting a business and increasing my income is not working for me yet – in fact, not working at all. And if I continue the kind of action I do now, I am not that sure if it will really create a change. So how can I create a balance between seeking knowledge and being practical is what I think as a result of this talkback and maybe that is a step in the right direction on its own.

    Kind Regards

    Jimmi

  • Funny how ingrained habits can be. That was cool.

Knowledge is power…that’s BS. Applied knowledge is power, now we’re talking. So many people are paralyzed by low self doubt so they subconsciously remain inactive and moving away from thier dreams because deep down they don’t believe they’re good enough…even though they ARE! Fired Up …keep up the good programming

  • Hi Stephen
Thanks you for your time and effort in producing yet another great delivery.
As I started to write my list of things to change a word kept coming up and the word was “active” so that is what I need to change i.e. my activity, in many areas.

A wise person will gather knowledge but he will then apply it in the correct way to give a successful outcome. The point is, if you don’t put the knowledge into action you will never know if the knowledge is good knowledge or bad knowledge. The wise person will adapt or change many things in order to improve and will continually analyze how he is doing. Just as a marketer will test and test and keep testing so too must we keep on testing and it is not possible to test without action.

Warning: If you find something that works perfectly don’t change it. You might like to try it in a different circumstance though to see if it works there too.

    Best wishes

  • I love the analogy of the dog sitting on the nail. That is so true about us humans. Until it hurts enough, we do nothing. Unless and until we are PROFOUNDLY related to what is happening around us, we will not be motivated to act. We would rather sit in our little cocoons of discomfort, than make a break for it, because we are scared that what lies outside the cocoon will be worse. What a load of hockeytoss!!

Just do it folks. I would never have transformed my small businesses into the automatic money-making machines that they are if I didn’t take a risk and subscribe to SMCC. I thought I was happy with what I was achieving, but now, I am doing 10 times better.

All I had to do was get profoundly related to the impact of my inertia, and then ACT.

I fondly remember what you said in an earlier talkback Stephen, there is no fear is action – it’s the waiting around before you act that is often riddled with fear. Too true.

    Have a great day everyone,

  • After 65 years and millions of frustrating experiences with people – especially involving the fact that logic doesn’t work, I can sum things up – familiarity and safety rule most people and their lives. No matter what you say, show, and recommend to people, most refuse to hear, learn, or change their ways. Advice – stop trying. Most people don’t want to change. Also, they resent others trying to teach, advise, and help them. They’d rather continue living with familiarity and safety.

  • Stephen,

    This is excellent.

In part 1 I asked what about the people who DO believe that they can be financially successful, but their belief hasn’t translated into results as of yet?

This talk back explains why they haven’t received results. It is because they have cognitive inertia, action inertia or voluntary inertia. I know I have had a big struggle with action inertia at many times in my life and career.

  • Hi Stephen,

This topic of change and why people are often reluctant to change is
    one that I find fascinating.

I was listening to an interview with Dave Lakhani recently and he had
this to say on the subject:

“Once people have made a commitment, once they’ve made a decision to
align themselves and their beliefs with a course or with a brand or with a product/service or even a person who is a salesperson, once they’ve aligned
themselves that way, that person has to do something fairly significant to
change the alignment. Because people are ultimately fairly lazy.

Once we’ve decided something is true, once we’ve aligned our belief with it,
we don’t want to change. We don’t want to have to go through the process
of figuring all this out again. It’s much easier to default to our old
    belief…

What we know is better than what we don’t know.”

I know what tastes good but I cant cook. Do y see my point? And are you going to do a talkback on finding what needs to change? I guess I must of been sick that day :)

    Hi Stephen,

Your talk is filled with many nuggests of wisdom. I enjoyed the stories you used to illustrate your various points about knowledge, skill, and desire. I agree that the pleasure/pain principal is behind many of things that motivate us to action.I think that many of us are creatures of habits that do not serve us, yet we continue to do them unconsciously until a significant event propells us into action as you suggest. I prefer to be on the proactive side of the equation rather the reactive side of change if possible. Thanks for sharing your insights.

    To your Success,

  • Inertia in whatever form seems to be a quality that is programmed into us at an early age. Some people avoid it, some overcome it but most just accept and live with it like a bad cold.

We need something like you just shared with us to innoculate us from the side-effects of intertia, such as a wasted life.

  • You have got to do it or lose it! I am clear that what got me to the next level was
taking my information and education and using it right away without thinking about it.

I did not allow analysis of paralysis. I focus my energy on creating the best outcome.

I learn best by going about the practical experiences of what I read, see and hear. The doing
part take me to the place of knowing. You have got to experience it in order to truly know it.

So, I am going to do my internet-marketing now!

  • Hi Freda,

Thank You very much for sharing your thoughts with me.
I have to say that I have reached pretty much the same conclusion that You have. However it has taken me a long time to reach that conclusion, and actually trying to figure out what to do with myself is a quest I have started just recently.

The core of the problem is that I never imagined that I could possibly go for what I wanted to do and actually succeed in doing it. So every single time that ANY idea popped into my head of something that I wanted, I instantly rejected it – or someone would tell me that I should get back to reality and then I would reject it.
You see, I never thought that I could possibly make a living by doing what I loved to do and finally I ended up not even knowing what my passions are. Consequently I have wasted a lot of time doing things that I really did not like to do, and I have wasted opportunities for growth and developement in the areas where I was previously passionate…
So I have this huge block in my head when it comes to the area of; what I want. Not just as a carrier, I really have to dig out every single “want” that I have. I have simply been conditioned through a lifetime to completely disregard my own wants and desires, and to instead do what everyone else expects me to do. – Well I did that and it made me absolutely misserable.

But now I have come a long way and I suddently realised through my studies, that I am capable of doing ANYTHING that I seriously want and I honestly believe that to be true – (and that is a major shift in awareness I would dare to say). So now I just need to figure out what I want, and the frustrating thing is that I am pulling blanks. I know that the answer lies somewhere within myself; but it has not completely reached the surface. – So my present goal is to figure out what my goals are. I simply suffer the consequence of not listning to my heart for so many years and I am trying to learn how to start listening again.

I do not just want to go out and figure out how I can become rich. I want to be happy and joyful doing that. Being passionate about what I do every day is more important to me than the pay of doing it. Hypothetically; If my becomming a millionair meant that I had to do something I just absolutely hated every day, then I would define that as a personal failure. If I am not happy and joyful, then what do I need the money for?
So the point is, that I do not just want to do anything. I want to do that something that I am supposed to be doing; that something that my heart cries out for me to do. – Well I do not know what that is excactly. But I will find out.

I kind of feel like I have the reverse problem that most people are facing. Most people know what they want, but they do not know how to get it. I know how to get what I want, I am just confused when I try to define it. I know this because every single goal that I have set, during the last 14 months or so, I have reached. They all have one thing in common and that was a feeling of clarity and of course the application of a process to acchieve them. – So I am aware that as long as I am confused and unable to make up my mind, then I will not reach the goal. X marks the spot and I believe this to be one of the most important elements of goal acchievement. You cannot be wasting your focus going from one goal to another and back to the first and on to a third option – clarity is essential.
I believe that I did express that on a previous talkback or two, that I am working on getting clear and that I am trying different processes in order to acchieve that. – So I am in the process right now and some of my confusion is actually starting to subside. – I have kind of been in the “search and find” part of the process, where I find new ideas, input and suggestions on how to solve a problem that I cannot solve myself. I now have several processes that I work with and the way I see it is, that it is all part of the process of reaching the goal that I made; to find my goals by getting clear.

You can be absolutely sure that I let my feelings and my intuition guide me. My feelings and intuition has served me well in many other areas. BUT I believe that You may be right about the fact, that I am (also) putting too much thinking into it.
Well… we are really talking about creative problem solving. I used to rely mainly on my logical, analytical left-brain to solve my problems – but that is a very limited approach and it only seems to “see” the problem from a current and past perspective. (To “see” the future or something new requires being creative).
Creative problem solving is more of a right-brain activity involving a much wider and more unlimited field of approaches. This does not confine the solution to the past, present or what is known. – The creative problem process includes the whole brain. But the point is, that one has to utilize the right brain and many people find that difficult because the left brain kind of rules their world.
I guess what I am trying to say is, that I have also been working in a very left-brained and my right brain has kind of been starving for attention. Well… maybe that is the real problem!? I am just learning how to use my whole brain again, so of course I am going to be challenged. – Creative problem solving (hmmmmm!)

Anyway I am writing away like a maniac again. Sorry about that, I did not mean to give such a far-stretched reply. It just happens.
But thank You kindly for your thoughts. :)

    Kind regards

    Jimmi

  • Hi Stephen

    ChiChi here,
This is a good one. This is like asking yourself, what do I want to be when I grow, and how bad do I want this? How far am I willing to go for this? Am I willing to claim this? Is this mine?
You will know when to make that change if you are smart. It is just like when you have to go to the restroom. Will you set there and mess you pants or will you make that move. Even under strick rules and regulations, that you can’t go but at a certain time, you will take that chance or risk if you have to go bad enough, you will go. The same about other oppotunities in your life, if the desire is stronge enough, you will buck everything, jump every hurdle, use every skill you have aquired through the years and apply it to change what need to be changed. This is after there is a spark that come from some where when you’ve seen the big picture. Something have to be done, reaction plan comes into play. That’s because you don’t want the GREMLIN to steal your success. You see the what, why, and how.
This depends on how strong your desire, aching, and yeaning is to see the need for change.

    Until next time,
    God bless you

    ChiChi
