It’s time to get motivated!

Motivation is fuel in the engine of our lives that helps us to take action on ideas and sustain action when our commitment to succeed becomes challenged.

And while many say all the power is in taking action, I say that’s only partially true because to take action on wrong information can be a disaster.

The right information precedes taking the right actions and thus, getting information and taking action are two sides of the same coin. <-- Obviously! Yea, I know.

However, when motivation both begins and ends with getting and collecting information and not following through with deliberate action, life becomes one of constant despair.

Many people allow their preparation (learning, knowing, getting information) turn into procrastination.

To get beyond that we must choose to focus on what we are going to, not what we are going through.

And “go through it” we will!

Once you pick the path in life where you choose to journey and find success, be it business, politics, athletics… you name it. You are immediately on a collision course with adversity.

Adversity is life’s gym where we do strength training to build the type of emotional, mental and spiritual muscle to be the victor over circumstances and not the victim.

Every conversation about what you want in life is put to the test the moment you decide to sit down and dine at the table of champions.

You don’t get a seat at the table because you want it… you get a seat at the table because you earned. Because life never gives us what we want… life gives us what we go claim and earn.

And to claim all the treasures in life that are rightfully yours, you must take deliberate action, have faith, be focused and have an unwavering consistency and patience.

Easier said than done?

Maybe, because… our faith is tested by the fiery flames of fear, uncertainly, doubt and critics, while our focus is tested by a thousand distractions and the tempting deceptions of multitasking, and our consistency is seduce by green pastures of other things we could be doing while our patience gets hammered by untimely setbacks and self imposed pressures of where we feel we should be, could be or would be… if this, that or the other did or didn’t happen.

There is no comfort to be found in the time machine when you visit the pains of your past or travel your time line to the future and entertain all the uncertainties it holds.

Life is a river of both bitter and sweet waters.

The bitterness of defeat in our journeys makes the sweetness of the grapes of victory all the better and we have a greater respect and appreciation for life and who we’ve become in the process.

Before I give you the answer to my previous post, let’s visit the three primary roles that we choose to play when faced with a challenge.

How are you feeling today?

Whatever that feeling is, what do you believe is causing you to feel that way?

Most people attach their feelings of fear, anger, happiness, enthusiasm, etc to external things.

For example, our dialog reveals this in statements like “he makes me so angry” or “that hurts my self-esteem” or even “that doesn’t make me feel confident.”

Truth is, external events have no meaning until you show up and attach meaning and stories to them.

So, it’s not really what’s happening externally that makes you feel good or bad, it’s the story you’re telling yourself about those events that are controlling your feelings.

So, however it is you’re feeling today, it’s not the weather or the events surrounding you. It’s your interpretations, perspective and stories about what is happening that is making you feel the way you feel.

So in short, you have chosen to feel what you are feeling right now.

For most people, it’s easier to “feel” than it is to “think” so instead of choosing to think in ways that build us up, we feel in ways that tear us down and gives our power over to circumstances and events.

Our own mind is the lever in which we use to turn on or off different feelings.

With those feelings, WE DECIDE to play roles, just as an actor or actress plays a role for a movie.

However, your roles are real life roles, that in some way or another pay dividends to you.

But what are those roles? I believe there are at least three primary roles we play, and I’ve played them all.

However, as I matured and took ownership of my life I chose a higher role, I gave myself permission to succeed in life, I took one step at a time, I allowed myself to be human and I enjoyed and continue to enjoy the process.

However, the starting point was in understanding the role I was playing and how it was holding me back.

So, let’s you and I start there together, today. After reading the three roles and the questions below, I would love for you to TalkBack to me and give me your perspective on this.

Victim Role;
The Victim is in constant “reactive” mode and avoids responsibility for his/her life, actions and results.
The Victim’s reactions are mostly “negative”

The Victim says… “It’s not fair.” “It’s not my fault.”

Persecutor Role;
The Persecutor is mostly in “reactive” mode and points the finger and blames others for what’s going on in his/her life.
The Persecutor’s reactions are mostly “negative”

The Persecutor says… “It’s your fault.” “Look at what you’ve done.”

Deliverer Role;
The Deliverer takes the initiative and is mostly in “proactive” mode and takes responsibility, ownership and control of his/her thoughts, actions and feelings.
The Deliverer is proactive and the actions are mostly “positive”

The Deliverer says… “There’s got to be a way.” “If there’s a problem, I’m the problem.”

Okay, so I have three questions for you.

Question #1: When faced with a challenge, what role are you choosing to play?

Question #2: Are your actions or reactions mostly negative, positive or neutral?

Question #3: How is your role, actions/reactions hurting or helping you?

Force #1: Self-Destructive. When a person lacks purpose, a mission and a true meaning to life, they tend to minimize who they are and miss what they can become… They lose their identity in the ideas of others and self-destruct as they tap their feet and bob their heads to someone elses song.

Force #2: Overextended. Many people practice the horrible art of “Doing too much.” It’s not about how much we can do as much as it is how much we can do right. Overextension blinds you to results as you get swallowed up with being busy. It all amounts to a bunch of running in place activities. Some would say… “you can never do enough” …I would argue… “you can always be doing too much.”

Force #3: Distracted. Like the unnecessary slowness of traffic because people are minding other people’s business …aka… too much rubber necking. In life many people get so caught up thinking about what others think about them, regretting their past, worried about their future and overwhelmed in the present… they’ve become too distracted to live. Stop rubber necking into your past regrets or into the worries about your future. You don’t need more focus… what you need… is to CONTROL the focus you have.

Force 4: Inefficient. Many people complain about not having enough resources while at the same time wasting the resources they have. So, how many of these hidden wastes are sucking the blood out of your life? Goal Aligning Waste, Process Waste, Reliability Waste, Scheduling Waste, Waiting Waste, Assignment Waste, Error Waste, Checking Waste, Missing Information Waste, Inaccuracy Waste, Work-In-Process Waste, Moving Things Waste, Paper Shuffle Waste. do you really need more? Start economizing and leverage the resources you do have.

Force #5: Undisciplined. Discipline isn’t something someone does to you (ie: martial arts, military). It’s something you decide to have for yourself. Three primary symptoms of lacking discipline are: 1. Lack of focus, 2. Inconsistency and 3. Impatience. However the secret sauce of self-discipline is self-esteem. Build your self-esteem and you can swing the sword of discipline like a samurai master.

Force #6: Untrained. Many believe that the game of life and business is won by the person or team with the most gifts and talent. I vehemently denounce that notion and argue that the game is won on “attitude” and “skills.” Attitude you can control, and “skills” you can build. You have now been set free because this simply means to win, all you have to do is acquire the right attitude and practice it daily… and you can drill the skills, daily. But oops… the hurdle here is, while most people want to be great… they don’t want to prepare to be great. And thus they leave the attitude to the reactions of the moment and not building the skills to a stronger belief in their limitations, not their unlimited potential.

Now, what’s the #1 thing you can do about this?

Well, you’ll just have to stay tuned to find that out.
